The Sonic franchise consists of some of my favorite games of all times. That’s why each year when a new, terrible game comes out, a part of me dies. So, I decided to design a brand new Sonic game from the ground up. New game mechanics, slightly new character design, and a brand new origin story.
Plot: Dr. Eggman, tired of being ridiculed by the scientific community for his unethical experiments and use of animals as test subjects, decides he wants to leave the planet in search of one he can rule himself. Dr. Eggman searches space for a planet weak enough for him to take over. Instead, he happens upon a chaos emerald floating in the ether. He takes it and uses its powers to tear a wormhole into another universe. He begins taking over planet after planet, taking advantage of each race using his advanced technology and the power of the chaos emerald. Dr. Eggman finds his way to Sonic’s world and begins his conquest.
Sonic tries to defeat Eggman but ends up defeated and thrown into space via one of Eggman’s newly created robots. Sonic, on the verge of death in space, gets pulled down to a greenish-clear colored comet hurtling through space. He is woken by a strange creature (Chaos) who gives him a chaos emerald and special suit that allows him to fly and breathe through space. Sonic uses the suit to hunt down Dr. Eggman, following him from planet to planet as he tries to undo all the damage that was made Eggman’s wake. Hoping to catch up with him and finally, put an end to all this.
Key Additions:
- All Sonic characters now wear clothing
- All Sonic species are now more indistinguishable from one another and boast their own unique skills and traits
- Different Sonic species live on different planets, and occasionally a planet will have two species
- Entire game takes place in Sonic’s universe; there are no humans except Dr. Eggman
Gameplay:
- Each Stage is a 3D open-world
- Sonic uses his wings on planets only for gliding, not for legitimate flying
- There are structures found hovering in place in some areas, a result of Dr. Eggman’s technology
- Sonic uses these structures to quickly run on and gain speed, to keep/gain momentum when flying
- When Sonic is in flight and dives into a platform, he immediately goes into a spin, the speed of which is dependent on the angle of entry
- Sonic runs much like he does in recent 3D games, but his homing attack button sequence is now replaced with a launch sequence
- Press jump button once to jump, and again in the air to deploy wings and take off
- Enemies can only be defeated by running or flying directly through them
- Tougher enemies have to be run or flown through at a certain minimum speed
- Bosses and mini-bosses have to be hit multiple times, still at minimum speeds
- Advance to next stages by completing objectives and defeating stage bosses
- Possible Objectives: Rescue VIP, collect objects (Eggman’s technology, rings, baby animals, etc. ), destroy Eggman technology around the city and more
- Side characters like Knuckles and Amy are only used as support characters; however, they function the same way that Elizabeth did in Bioshock Infinite and never die during gameplay
